Matthew hails from Woodland, California where he grew up for most of his young life, moving to Portland, Oregon in 2008 to attain a bachelor’s degree in Exercise and Sports Sciences and to compete on a full athletic and academic scholarship with Concordia University Portland in Edubirdie and Field. In his junior year, Matthew started a job managing two small local owned gyms known as The Green Micro Gym, where he also did some personal training.
After he graduated and decided to leave in 2010 due to an ACL tear that required surgery, Matthew started to do volunteer coaching for Concordia with the 400 meter sprinters. After a change in staff at the University Matthew got offered a position coaching at Grant High School with the Sprinters and the Javelin throwers where his boys got 6th in 2014 State meet and his girls took 3rd.
Matthew has experience training individuals from all walks of life, ranging from volunteering with Oregon Special Olympics in Basketball and The Washington State School for the Blinds P.E. program to High School and Collegiate athletes to the common Joe wanting to get back in shape. Currently Matthew is an avid runner, cyclist, and swimmer. He plans on one day competing in an Iron Man competition as well as participation in the “Escape from Alcatraz” event.
Growing up playing soccer in Beaverton was amazing. After High School and my love of athletics came a new discipline called Parkour. Some have defined it as a way to get from Point A to Point B as fast and fluidly as possible. For me the discipline was a new perspective on life. I realized there are many obstacles in life. Some of these obstacles are physical and others are psychological. I then applied that knowledge to my passion for fitness and health at Portland State University where I received my Bachelor’s degree in Health Studies: Physical Activity/Exercise.
Before, graduating from PSU, however, I participated in an Internship with EXOS a leading company in athletic performance and corporate wellness helping anyone from an elite athlete to the everyday person. While there, coaching and learning about being a Performance Specialist I realized that the general population was not getting the same treatment as athletes.
Shortly, after the internship ended I finished studies at PSU, received my training certification, and started working in the field immediately. I enjoy implementing comprehensive functional performance. Not everyone moves the same way or has the same lifestyle, therefore to efficiently improve their health and fitness we must look at all aspects of their lifestyle. My training is geared toward the individual overall lifestyle and not just their fitness performance.
“Hollywood Fitness now has the best value in Portland for personal training. And I guarantee the results.”
